What Might Need More Care in Your Life?

A rainbow over the harbor after a storm

There is something about the end of summer that has always felt like a fresh start to me.

Maybe it goes back to those late, August days when I looked forward to the September issue of Seventeen magazine, new school clothes, fresh notebooks, and the feeling that another year was about to begin. Long before I had the language for it, I think I loved the possibility that came with a new season.

I still feel that way about fall.

There is a subtle shift as summer begins to wind down. Schedules become more structured. School starts. Vacations end. The days get a little shorter, and life begins to find its rhythm again. For many of us, it can also be a natural time to take stock of how we are doing.

Not necessarily to reinvent anything.

Sometimes we simply need to notice what could use a little more care.

Maybe your mornings have become rushed and you are craving a little more breathing room before the day begins. Maybe you have been saying yes too often and need to protect more of your time. Maybe a relationship needs some attention, work has been taking up more space than you intended, or something important to you has quietly found its way to the bottom of the list.

Sometimes what needs care is even simpler. Getting more rest. Putting the phone down. Spending time outside. Calling someone you miss. Making an appointment you have been putting off. Returning to something that once made you feel more like yourself.

We can easily fall into the belief that meaningful change has to be big to matter. It doesn’t.

Small shifts can change the way a day feels. And enough of those days can begin to change the way a life feels.

This is something I see often in therapy. People do not always need an entirely different life. Sometimes they need more room within the life they already have. More rest. More connection. Clearer boundaries. Less pressure. More of what matters and a little less of what doesn’t.

The challenge is giving ourselves enough space to notice the difference.

As we move into a new season, it may be worth asking yourself a few simple questions:

  • What feels good in my life right now?
  • What feels harder than it needs to?
  • Where am I giving more of myself than I have to give?
  • What have I been missing?
  • What in my life could use a little more care?

There is no expectation that you have all the answers. You do not need a dramatic plan for changing your life. Sometimes simply noticing what you need is a meaningful place to begin.

Fall still gives me that familiar feeling of possibility. These days, though, I am less interested in filling a new season with more things to accomplish. I am more interested in being intentional about what deserves my time, attention, and energy.

Maybe caring for our lives begins there.

Not with the expectation that we need to fix ourselves or become someone different, but with the willingness to pay attention. To notice what is working, what feels heavy, what we miss, and what we may need more of.

As you move into this next season, consider asking yourself:

What in my life might be asking for a little more care?
